John J. VanLeuven, of Hyde Park, was arrested on Wednesday, April 8, by New York State Police after receiving tips from the public following a story and photos requesting help, said Trooper AJ Hicks.

Within a day, troopers received leads that led to the arrest of VanLeuven.

During the incident, VanLeuven was allegedly driving a stolen 2010 Toyota Corolla, with New York license plate HBH6474 when he was involved in a hit-and-run motor crash in Dutchess County in the town of Hyde Park, Hicks said.

An investigation located security footage from a nearby Stop & Shop, at 3999 Albany Post Road, that showed VanLeuven as he walked out of the store with a cart full of merchandise, Hicks said.

VanLeuven was charged with criminal possession of stolen property, petit larceny, and multiple traffic charges.
